I love learning unfamiliar words and having my kids join in. We often choose a new word of the week and practice using it in various ways. My kids love pulling out the dictionary to find new intriguing words. I am a self-proclaimed word nerd and my kids are known to be little grammar police.
Teaching your kids can and should be fun. This is not always easy, but teaching verbs makes it easy. So hop, skip, jump, run and swing. Go ahead, do it all and let your kids join in the fun.
It is no secret that we have been working on the parts of speech over here at Let’s Learn With Style. We have had a lot of fun and I feel like some great learning took place too. The challenge is making sure kids retain what they learn.
Spelling is one of those things that many people struggle with for years. My daughter is a first grader this year so we added a list of spelling words to her curriculum each week. She really loves learning the new words but she is always worried she won’t know them at the end of the week. Even though we reassure her, she still talks about her words throughout the week. I want her to learn the words without feeling the pressure of a test. I decided to integrate fun ways to learn the words and then test her throughout the week without her knowing by doing fun activities with the words. Here are a few of the fun activities that we have incorporated into our day for spelling.
Cause and effect. If you have little ones in your house you have a whole lot of this going on all day long. My house is a bit of a mess right now and I can tell you who caused it.
In, on, under, behind, near, opposite, beside, beneath, inside, outside… Prepositions are function words. They have two main functions, connect the noun to the rest of the sentence and specify the position of the noun. Simple enough, right? Maybe not if you are little and just being introduced to the complicated world of grammar and all of the crazy rules that go with it.
Conjunctions are words that connect two independent clauses or sentences. Conjunctions always make me think about the Schoolhouse Rock song, Conjunction Junction, What’s Your Function? I am not sure why that one stuck in my head but it definitely did.
How, how often, where and when? If you are asking these questions you are most likely using adverbs. This part of speech can be more difficult for kids to recognize and can leave them feeling frustrated.

Adjectives are used to describe or modify a noun. Although this is still a fairly simple part of speech it may not be as easy for little ones to understand as some of the others.
